BJP candidate and popular young leader Alpesh Thakor won the Gandhinagar South seat with a margin on over 40,000 votes against Congress spokesperson Himanshu Patel. Gandhinagar South, part of Gandhinagar district, came into existence after the 2008 delimitation. It falls in the Ahmedabad East Lok Sabha constituency.
This is the third time when a BJP candidate has won the seat. In both the 2012 and 2017 Gujarat Assembly elections since the seat came into existence the BJP has been the winner here.
Thakor, formerly with the Congress and one of the faces of anti-BJP stir in the state during the 2017 polls, joined the BJP in 2019. He had won on the Congress ticket in 2017 but lost his Radhanpur seat in the subsequent bypoll in 2019.
